Eight churches have been attacked over three days in Malaysia

Church attacks in Malaysia deepen racial tension

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Eight churches have been attacked over three days amid a dispute over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims, sparking fresh political instability that is denting Malaysia's image as a moderate and stable Muslim-majority nation.

The unprecedented attacks have set off a wave of disquiet among Malaysia's minority Christians and strained their ties with the majority Malay Muslims. About 9 percent of Malaysia's 28 million people are Christian, most of whom are ethnic Chinese or Indian. Muslims make up 60 percent of the population and most are ethnic Malays.

The attacks were a blow to racial unity espoused by Prime Minister Najib Razak under his "1Malaysia" slogan since taking power in April, and posed a headache for him as he seeks to strengthen his ruling coalition after its losses in 2008 general elections.

"It showed that, after 52 years of living together, nation building and national unity is in tatters," said Charles Santiago, an opposition Member of Parliament. "The church attacks shattered notions of Malaysia as a model secular Muslim nation in the eyes of the international community.

"Malaysians are now living in fear of a racial clash following the church attacks and rising orthodox Islamic tones in the country," Santiago said.

Many Muslims are angry about a Dec. 31 High Court decision overturning a government ban on Roman Catholics' using "Allah" to refer to their God in the Malay-language edition of their main newspaper, the Herald.

The ruling also applies to the ban's broader applications such as Malay-language Bibles, 10,000 copies of which were recently seized by authorities because they translated God as Allah. The government has appealed the verdict.

Firebombs were thrown at seven churches nationwide since Friday, with another splashed with black paint. No one was hurt and all suffered little damage, except the Metro Tabernacle Church in a Kuala Lumpur suburb, which had its office on the first floor gutted by fire.

Religious minorities have often complained about what they say is institutionalized religious discrimination here as Islam takes on increasing dominance.

Analysts said the line between race and religion in Malaysia is eroding as Najib's ruling United Malays National Organization pursue racial issues more intensely to shore up support.

"There has been a gradual merging of Malay identity with Islam. Malaysia is heading toward dangerous waters," said James Chin, political science lecturer at Monash University in Malaysia.

"Minorities are under siege and feel they don't have a place in Malaysia anymore," he said.

Malaysia's ruling coalition, the National Front, is dominated by UMNO, which is made up exclusively of Malay Muslims. The Front narrowly won general elections in 2008, but it was its worst performance after five decades of political dominance since Malaysia won independence in 1957.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim blamed the church attacks on the UMNO-led government's "incessant racist propaganda" over the Allah issue and inflammatory rhetoric issued by state-controlled mainstream media.

Even Razaleigh Hamzah, a veteran UMNO member, has criticized UMNO for "digging itself into an intolerant hard-line position" in a bid to woo voters after its election losses.

"UMNO is fanning communal sentiment, and the government it leads is taking up policy lines based on sensitivities rather than principle," he said.

The Allah ban is unusual in the Muslim world. The Arabic word is commonly used by Christians to describe God in such countries as Egypt, Syria and Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation.

The Herald has been using Allah in its Bahasa Malaysia publication since 1995, but it was not until 2006 that it was warned by the government to stop using Allah to refer to God.

Despite the attacks, thousands of Christians nationwide attended Sunday services and prayed for national unity and an end to the violence.

Men, women and children from the Metro Tabernacle parish assembled Sunday in a cavernous, 1,800-seat meeting hall of the Malaysian Chinese Association party for the service. They lifted their hands and sang "We put all our faith in you," and "You are the God of love and peace."

Government leaders and many Muslims have condemned the firebombings, saying it is un-Islamic to attack places of worship.

Najib visited the Metro Tabernacle church late Saturday and announced a grant of 500,000 ringgit ($147,000) for rebuilding it at a new location, a major concession in a country where permission is rarely given for building new churches or temples.

"It's been a difficult weekend for all. I share your outrage. We must stand united and not allow these incidents to break us," Najib wrote on his twitter account, NajibRazak.

The Rev. Hermen Shastri, general secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia, said Christians won't be intimidated by the attacks, describing them as the work of an extremist minority among Muslims.

MAINKAN API AKHIRNYA API MEMBAKAR SENDIRI!

Malaysian church fire-bombed---THE WORLD IS LOOKING THE PROGRESS!!!!SHARE MARKET WILL HEAD SOUTH NEXT WEEK...MAY BE DROPPED 30 TO 100 POINTS!!!

Malaysian church fire-bombed ahead of Muslim protests
Row over Christian use of 'Allah'

Two Malaysian churches have been attacked, leaving one badly damaged, in an escalating dispute over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims.

As Muslim groups prepared to hold protests Friday, police stepped up security around churches nationwide after one in suburban Kuala Lumpur was fire-bombed in a midnight attack that gutted its ground floor and another had its grounds set ablaze.

See the damage in our photogallery below

"We are investigating the matter thoroughly and those responsible will be brought to book," police chief Musa Hassan told reporters.

"Police will deploy patrol cars to patrol churches in the country. We will investigate the matter thoroughly."

A fire department official said all stations were on alert for more blazes at religious buildings, amid conflict over the use of "Allah" as a translation for "God" by Christians.

Pribumi Perkasa, one of the groups organising the demonstrations to be held after Friday prayers, condemned the attacks but warned that Muslim Malays, who dominate the population, were deeply concerned.

"We will continue to voice our feelings in protests today because you cannot stop the outflow of feelings on this issue," the group's president, Ibrahim Ali, told AFP.

"I think it may have been because of restricting Muslims from voicing their anger and fears that the church attacks took place. You must understand that if Muslims are unhappy, I'm sure there will be no peace in this country."

The High Court last week ruled in favour of the Catholic "Herald" newspaper which has used "Allah" as a translation for "God" in its Malay-language section. The government has said the word should be used only by Muslims.

See the damage in our photogallery below

The ruling was suspended on Wednesday pending an appeal, after the government argued the decision could cause racial conflict in Malaysia, where Malays make up 60 percent of the population.

The ground floor of the three-storey Metro Tabernacle church, part of the Assemblies of God movement, was destroyed in the attack.

"Witnesses saw four people smash the glass and throw incendiaries into the church building. They came on two motorcycles," church leader Peter Yeow told AFP, warning other churches to "double their guard" against any attacks.

There were no casualties in the attack on the church, which occupies the corner lot of a row of shop houses and which Yeow said draws some 1,500 people weekly.

Several hours later, the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Kuala Lumpur's southwest was targeted, parish priest Philip Muthu said.

"I was awoken by men riding on motorcycles who threw a kerosene bomb into the church compound," he told AFP.

"The bomb lit a fire and damaged part of the compound but it did not burn down the church building," Muthu added. "I don't know why they are doing this but this is worrying."

Authorities at the nearby Saint Francis Xavier church said they were taking security precautions after receiving warnings that a protest would be staged outside the building.

Anuar Harun, who headed the fire department operation at the Metro Tabernacle, said that forensic experts were working with the police and a canine unit to probe the blaze.

"We have asked all our fire stations to be on alert for such fires on religious premises," he told AFP.

Religion and language are sensitive issues in multiracial Malaysia, which experienced deadly race riots in 1969.

The row over the use of "Allah" is among a string of religious disputes that have erupted in recent years, straining relations between Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians who fear the country is being "Islamised."

More than half of Malaysia's Catholics are from indigenous groups, most of whom live in the Borneo island states and who mainly speak Malay.

Tiger Woods released a statement Wednesday offering a "profound apology" that copped only to vague "transgressions," allowing tabloid magazines to fill in the blanks with a slew of reports that the golfer has engaged in multiple extramarital affairs.

More PhotosWoods' statement was released on the same day two tabloids -- US Weekly and Life & Style -- published the names of two separate women, Kalika Moquin and Jaimee Grubbs, with whom they reported he had carried on affairs. Those magazines both followed stories by the National Enquirer over the weekend that named another woman, Rachel Uchitel.

Grubbs provided text messages and voice recordings to US Weekly, which she said are proof of a lengthy affair. Uchitel, on the other hand, has denied an affair with Woods. Gloria Allred, Uchitel's high-powered attorney, was expected to hold a press conference Thursday afternoon to address the allegations, but cancelled it Thursday morning.

The reported affairs, coming in the days after Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade Nov. 27 outside his Florida home, have marred the squeaky clean image of the world's number one golfer, and left many fans to wonder how the sportsman has spent much of his time off the links.

"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart," said Woods in the statement. "I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves.

"I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect," said Woods. "I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone."

The most recent report of an affair came in Life & Style Wednesday afternoon. The tabloid said the golfer of consorted with a Las Vegas nightclub executive, Moquin, 27.

According to the magazine, Moquin, a Missoula, Mont., native who works The Bank club at the Bellagio hotel, "neither confirmed nor denied an affair with Tiger."
