More Americans are reaching their 60s with so much debt they can't afford to retire.

Most people used to pay off their debts before retiring. But as wages have barely kept up with rising prices over the past 35 years Americans have pushed debt higher, living beyond their means. Now, people are postponing retirement, cutting living standards or both.

All kinds of debt held by this age group have risen, but the big problem is mortgages. Thirty-nine percent of households with heads aged 60 through 64 had primary mortgages in 2010 and 20% had secondary mortgages, including home-equity lines, according to research group Strategic Business Insights' MacroMonitor. That was up from just 22% and 12%, respectively, in 1994.

The housing crash has made things worse. A few years ago, homeowners in their 60s with big mortgages could sell their homes for a profit and buy smaller places or rent. But the drop in housing values means that many homeowners have little equity, and some now owe more than their houses are worth.

People have tried to reduce debt since the financial crisis, with limited success. Americans of all ages owed $11.4 trillion at the end of the second quarter, based on data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That's down about 15% from 2007 but nearly double what they owed in 1999, adjusted for inflation and population.

Older Americans also have struggled to dig out in the past four years. "Relative to the value of their homes, the amount of indebtedness if anything has gone up because house prices have fallen faster than mortgages have been reduced," says Christopher Herbert, director of research at Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.

Many have little choice but to keep working. "I imagine I'll be working until I'm 70," says Christine Shiber, a 59-year-old Methodist minister in California's Bay Area, struggling to pay off her mortgage, credit-card debt and a loan she took against her retirement account.

Debt isn't the only issue clouding retirement prospects. People aren't saving enough either. As calculated in a Wall Street Journal article earlier this year, the typical American household nearing retirement with a 401(k) retirement account has less than one-quarter of what it needs in that account to maintain its standard of living in retirement.

Four out of five households with heads in their early 60s and with mortgages had too little savings in 2008 to pay off debts without dipping into retirement accounts, according to Boston College economist Anthony Webb.

[More from WSJ.com: Family Feuds: The Battles Over Retirement Accounts]

Instead of boosting their savings as they approach retirement, a period when people usually make their largest retirement contributions, some older people are stopping contributions in order to service debts. Some who had already retired are going back to work because they can't make the financial numbers add up.

The combination of easy credit, low interest rates and a consumption-oriented culture helped fuel a spending binge for Americans until the financial crisis. People with problems aren't just those who took subprime loans or spent foolishly on lavish lifestyles. They are people from all backgrounds, including some with six-figure incomes.

"We have gotten into this 'debt's OK' mentality and it is going to be very hard to get out of it," says financial planner Greg Heller of Heller Capital Resources in Los Angeles, who says he has wealthy clients in their 50s with problems.

The Rev. Shiber and her husband borrowed to buy a home and for their children's education, something many Americans have done. They divorced in 2007 and sold the home, repaying debts.

But Ms. Shiber needed a place to live. In 2008, she took out a fresh mortgage to buy a condominium. The down payment, together with her son's college costs, used a big chunk of her remaining savings.

Soon, Ms. Shiber realized that she wasn't making ends meet. She had trouble paying credit-card bills and started running a balance. Her 2001 Ford Focus needed a big, unexpected repair. She borrowed against her retirement account.

To her relief, Ms. Shiber negotiated a raise late last year. She then got a letter from her bank saying it had under-calculated her property-tax obligations. It raised her monthly mortgage bill, including property taxes, by an amount slightly more than the raise.

To Ms. Shiber, the debt burden began to seem biblical. "Even with Job, there weren't these coincidences," she laments. "I said, 'Now, God, you are really messing with me!'"

[More from WSJ.com: Saving Strategies for Older Singles]

After consulting with a financial adviser, Ms. Shiber cut living expenses. She travels less to visit her mother and daughter in New York and has fewer meals out. To her adviser's dismay, she also has cut most of her contributions to her retirement plan.

Christine and Mark Nordell, a couple in their 60s, have put off retirement for at least two more years as they struggle to pay down their mortgage and credit-card debt and a daughter's student loan.

Their plan was to sell their house in a Minneapolis suburb, pay off their debt and retire to a second home near a lake. But the Minneapolis home's value plunged in the housing collapse and their plans went on hold.

Then Mr. Nordell lost his job when the nonprofit entity he founded to help African immigrants in the U.S. lost its funding. His new job as a part-time minister provides less income. The family lives mainly on Ms. Nordell's income as a speech pathologist.

Despite efforts to cut spending and pay down debt, their credit-card debt sometimes has crept higher. Their home requires improvements before it can be sold, and they can't afford them. They refinanced the mortgage and increased the loan balance to reduce high-interest credit-card balances.

They have retirement savings and a pension, which they think will cover retirement needs, but only after they get rid of the debt. Ms. Nordell hopes that the housing market recovers enough so they can sell their Minneapolis home, which would solve some problems.

"We did have some good stock investments, which have really saved us," she says. "I have gradually had to cash them all in to help us with living expenses."

Debt levels of older Americans have been rising for more than two decades. Of households with heads aged 62 through 69 and with mortgages, the median amount of mortgage debt hit $71,000 in 2007, five times the 1987 inflation-adjusted median, according to a study by William Apgar, then at Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.

Most people make their biggest salaries in their 50s and 60s, which should permit them to make their biggest retirement-savings contributions. But partly because of debt payments, many are missing out on the end-of-career push that is supposed to boost retirement savings to where they need to be.

Fidelity Investments, one of the largest managers of 401(k) retirement accounts, says participants aged 55 to 60 contributed a median 8% of salary in the first quarter of this year, down from 10% in the same quarter of 2006. Some cut contributions to zero. Even the 8% level is well below the double-digit contribution rate financial planners recommend for older workers.

[More from WSJ.com: How to Turn In Your Neighbor to the IRS]

In addition, some people, like Ms. Shiber, have borrowed against existing retirement savings. Others have withdrawn savings early. TIAA-CREF, another large retirement-money manager, says that new loans taken out by participants of all ages against retirement accounts rose by 18.8% in 2010 over 2009.

Debt problems are so pervasive that they are affecting retirement expectations even of people far from retirement.

Rob Salvaggio of Glencoe, Ill., won't turn 50 until later this month, but he already is expecting a financial hit when he retires
.

Mr. Salvaggio, who works for a real-estate manager, once dreamed of retiring at 55, but his mortgage, auto and credit-card debts are so high that he is aiming now at something more like 65. Because of heavy monthly debt payments, his wife has stopped contributing to her 401(k) and he is making only minimal contributions to his.

"We aren't going to be able to maintain or increase our standard of living in retirement," he says. "We are going to go backwards."

Mr. Salvaggio and his wife, Wendi, make good incomes and their financial adviser has urged them to cut back on their standard of living to reduce their debt. But Mrs. Salvaggio, who works for a multinational technology company, went through a difficult divorce before they married. Now, to provide stability for her son, they are determined to remain in the neighborhood where they live, even though it is expensive. When the landlord took back their rental home, they decided to buy another home, take on a mortgage and cut back on retirement savings.

"We all agreed that it wasn't the optimal idea," he says, although he hopes his home's value will rise, permitting him to sell at a profit when he retires. "We thought it was better for our son to stay here."

Are You Ready for a Longer, and Better, Retirement?

The more things change, the less they will be the same. That's not a mistake. That's a fact. Over the next decade, new products, technology and adviser practices will make retirement look quite different than it does today.

Joseph Coughlin, Ph.D., the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, Rick Miller, Ph.D., CFP, and president and founder of Sensible Financial and Management, and Kathryn McCabe Votava, Ph.D., the president and founder of GOODCARE.com, all offered their views on the ways retirement will change, as part of MarketWatch's Retirement Adviser series.

Longer lives, ill health

According to the experts, Americans will likely live longer than their forbearers. That's the good news. The bad news is that they will likely live their lives with some sort of chronic illness, such as Type 2 diabetes or hypertension. "Here are some statistics to make you put down the chocolate croissants for a few minutes," said Coughlin. "110 million Americans have at least one chronic disease; 60 million of us have at least two; and 20 million of us won the lottery ticket of five chronic diseases. This is your future. You are going to be living longer. You will be ill, but you won't necessarily be sick."

Health-care will be more expensive than anticipated

And being ill will come with some health-care costs that you weren't anticipating or imagining. And all of those costs are unlikely to be covered by insurance, they'll be out-of-pocket. For instance, managing Type 2 diabetes might require the use of telehealth services, which will help you stay in the workforce or age in place, but that service won't be covered by traditional retiree health insurance plans. In the future, you might call your local telecommunications provider to check your glucose level every single day as well as talk to a coach who can help you manage your illness.

Coughlin noted, for instance, that major pharmacy chains are now providing visiting nurse services and equipment care to the home, and that grocery stores are now providing nutrition services geared specifically to your needs as you age with specific chronic disease categories.

"It's going to also be a matter of how much is it going to cost you to manage that illness so that you can stay in the game to either work, visit a grandchild, or whatever it may be," said Coughlin. "So the new cost of health care, we haven't even begun to imagine, but the new services that are coming out there, are going to be all out-of-pocket. They are not going to be covered right away by government, if at all."

Some health-care costs could decline

Votava agreed that that some health-care costs that aren't covered by Medicare today might be covered in the future if it costs the government less than the existing alternative.

"Telehealth and some of these other technologies have the potential to bring down health-care costs," said Votava. "We're really undercapitalized in health care overall using technologies. Every other industry has put more technology in and then gained more productivity out of it; but overall, yes, people are going to spend more of their pocket than they think that they will, but some of these things that aren't covered yet today will be covered in the future, because it's more economical to help a person stay at home and not be the rotating door in and out of the emergency room."

Novel services will emerge

To be sure telehealth has been around for years, but the experts also predicted new and different services will emerge as the baby boomer march toward and into retirement. "The people that want equality of life, the folks, frankly, the mass affluent and affluent market, especially who have been used to a high quality of life and expect to have that quality of life diminish a little bit over time because they're aging, because that's the nature of aging, are going to be looking for the novel services," said Coughlin.

For instance, Coughlin said, point-of-decision technology will play a big role in helping people decide whether to spend today or save for tomorrow. One such app that exists today shows the price of an item being considered for purchase and what that amount of money could translate into, in terms of monthly income in retirement, if it was saved to the participant's 401(k) plan.

Expectations will be high

As the experts mused about the future, they also suggested that a large gap will develop between expectations on the part of baby boomers and reality. Coughlin referred to the baby boomers as "Generation Expectation." Boomers believe they that they are going to live fundamentally better than their parents. "There will be a medicine," he said. "There will be a policy. There will be a service to help me live longer, better."

But the boomers haven't addressed how they're going to fund it. "They haven't addressed how they're going to be able to arrange their lives and their cars and their houses and the like to be able to pay for it, but that gap between expectations, as to what it's like for me to age vs. my parents and grandparents, is going to be a major tension point with financial analysts and planners and the product manufacturers out there, not to mention the politics of it in the background," said Coughlin.

Financial adviser as storyteller, psychologist and expert extraordinaire

The experts also said that financial advisers of the future will look nothing like financial advisers of today. The financial adviser of tomorrow will be an expert in Medicare, not just modern portfolio theory. They will storytellers and psychologists, not just people who rebalance a portfolio once per year.

For instance, Miller said, financial advisers in the future (though some do this today) will help clients sort through the retirement risks, rank the risks in terms of importance, because some of them are much more important than others, and some of them are much more insurable than others.
What's more, they will "encourage people to think about things that are uncomfortable, to think about what they aren't going to think about on their own," said Miller.

Miller also said financial advisers of the future will help couples sort through and plan for the notion that one of them, usually the wife, will outlive the other 99% of the time. "One of them is going to end up living alone," said Miller. "You have to have a plan for that. You have to know, have some idea how that's going to work, whether there will be enough resources and the like. But I think it's unrealistic to expect individuals to do all of this detailed planning... on their own"

Coughlin, for his part, agreed that financial advisers will evolve into something other than what they are today. "The future of practice management is going to have to be being more of a storyteller and psychologist and not just being able to drive the models," he said. "That's going to be a major part of the job, but the other part of it is to make it simple."

As psychologist, financial advisers will need to have in-depth conversations with their clients. "They've always broken out in hives to talk," said Coughlin, who noted that financial planners can build plans to manage retirement risks, but are not well equipped to have a deeper discussion around health for instance. "I would suggest that in addition to the products that we need to think about, in addition to the amount of money that we need to plan how to keep the standard of living that we now enjoy or maybe a little less, we need to really get into the head of the client far more in terms of what's actually going on behind the scenes that are going to provide some sort of statistical assessment as to what that risk is," said Coughlin.

Coughlin also suggested that advisers who can tell stories that elicit emotion and inspire people to act will be more the norm than the exception. At the moment, financial advisers have a tough go of getting people to plan for something that might happen at age 85, and that's made all the more difficult given the velocity and the complexity of daily life today.

Said Coughlin: "So we've got to be good storytellers to get that emotion, to make us relevant, responsive and realistic for what the consumer needs today to plan for tomorrow."

Aussie Fund SEE WORST---Billions wiped from Australia's Future Fund

Billions wiped from Australia's Future Fund
By Mark Di Stefano
Updated October 29, 2011 15:10:50

More than $2 billion has been wiped from Australia's Future Fund, with the uncertain global financial system blamed for the losses.

The Board of Guardians of Australia's Future Fund has updated its figures for the quarter and the news is not good.

The fund, set up by the Howard government to cover the superannuation of public servants, suffered a 2.9 per cent loss in the quarter ending in September.

That shrinks the value of the Future Fund from $75.39 billion to $73.18 billion.

Board chairman David Murray has reported global uncertainty caused the loss and stressed the country needs to look at reform to avoid future losses.

Mr Murray pointed to productivity, industrial relations and public spending as potential areas for reform.

This quarter's fall aside, the fund has made 4.4 per cent every year since 2006.

Finance Minister Penny Wong has blamed global volatility and uncertainty for the loss, and says it is important to keep the fall in perspective.

"Looking at the global economy, we know there is a lot of volatility around," she said.

"But I think it is important to recall this is a long-term investment and we should treat with caution quarterly returns. Because obviously quarterly results need to be taken in context of a long-term investment."

Mr Murray warns the economy needs change if it is going to be insulated from global uncertainty, and acting shadow treasurer Andrew Robb says it is time for the Government to act.

"We've got huge and growing debt, so they've got to start to live within their means," he said.

"We've got very low productivity. We've got significant industrial unrest and high wage pressure. We are falling down on so many fronts."

NOT SO ROSY ON EUROPE CRISIS----"I'm surprised financial markets have taken this to be a huge step forward," says Zanny Minton-Beddoes, The Economist's economics editor. "Like many of the previous deals — and we've had a number of them— when you look at the details, people are going to be somewhat more disappointed."

Global financial markets surged Thursday on the news that European leaders finally agreed to a solution for the euro zone sovereign debt crisis, which has worried the world for more than two years. U.S. markets jumped 3% upon news of the deal, while European bourses were up nearly 5%.

"I'm surprised financial markets have taken this to be a huge step forward," says Zanny Minton-Beddoes, The Economist's economics editor. "Like many of the previous deals — and we've had a number of them— when you look at the details, people are going to be somewhat more disappointed."

The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task caught up with Minton-Beddoes at The Economist's annual Buttonwood Gathering in downtown Manhattan. Of the market boost, she says it is worth remembering that a post-EU summit rally is not uncommon — only time will tell if investors believe this package will truly prevent a crisis.

Here's what we know of the deal thus far:

The European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) — aka "the bailout fund" — will increase from roughly $600 billion to $1.4 trillion and will be used to help create a firewall around the EU's most troubled countries, such as Greece, Spain and Italy.
China and the IMF could help raise money for that bailout fund.
Private bondholders of Greek debt have agreed to 50% haircuts, which will reduce the country's debt burden from 160% of gross domestic product to 120% by 2020.
Greece will receive $180 billion in fresh aid.
Recapitalize the banks with a 9% reserve requirement by June 2009. Estimates show this will cost roughly $147 billion.
"This is a step forward, but hasn't yet solved the problem," says Minton-Beddoes. There are four elements to a comprehensive solution, she argues: 1) create a credible firewall around the PIIGS 2) recapitalize the banks 3) deal decisively with Greek debt and 4) change the governing policies of the entire euro zone. EU leaders did address those key components, but not well enough, in her opinion.
While many are concerned about the details over the haircuts for Greek bondholders, Minton-Beddoes is most concerned about the EFSF. The $1.4 trillion is merely an "aspiration," she says, questioning whether the additional funds, or firepower, can actually be raised. The European Central Bank solution has been ruled out, while France and Germany have vowed not to contribute any more to the crisis.

"Unless you have a clear firewall around countries like Spain and Italy, then it doesn't matter how much you recapitalize your banks if there is still a fear that the problems can lead to Spain and Italy," she says.

chicken wings/necks no good to you!!!!!!!!!!!

Chicken Wings- Its Dangerous (Folks, I Care)

Growth of a cyst in the womb Avoid eating chicken wings frequently - ladies, especially; a true story...! A friend of mine recently had a growth in her womb and she underwent an operation to remove the cyst. The cyst removed was filled with a dark colored blood.

She thought that she would be recovered after the surgery but! she was terribly wrong. A relapse occurred just a few months later. Distressed , she rushed down to her gynecologist for a consultation. During her consultation, her doctor asked her a question that puzzled her.

He ask if she was a frequent consumer of chicken wings and she replied yes wondering as to how, he knew of her eating habits.

You see, the truth is in this modern day and age; chickens are injected with steroids to accelerate their growth so that the needs of this society can be met. This need is none other than the need for food.

Chickens that are injected with steroids are usually given the shot at the neck or the wings. Therefore, it is in these places that the highest concentration of steroids exists.

These steroids have terrifying effects on the body as it accelerates growth.. It has an even more dangerous effect in the presence of female hormones, this leads to women being more prone to the growth of a cyst in the womb.

Therefore, I advise the people out there to watch their diets and to lower their frequency of consuming chicken wings! SingaporeMedical Association

A Police Report Will Be Lodged Against UMNO Online

A Police Report Will Be Lodged Against UMNO Online Within 48 Hours If No Withdrawal And Apology Is Made By UMNO Online

By Lim Guan Eng

Both my wife and I are outraged at the continued attacks by BN leaders on the lies about my young son outraging the modesty of his girl classmate, causing him to be transferred to another school and that I had even paid RM200,000 to the girl’s family to hush up the matter. I had wanted to let the matter rest after my young son, who is not even 16, was proven innocent.

My son was clearly a victim of morally despicable and barbaric lies when proven that: -

my son had transferred to St Xavier Institution in January 2011 and not in May 2011 as alleged;

the picture of the alleged girl classmate victim was “faked”, as she is a 21 year old woman from Hong Kong and not even a Malaysian

the alleged victim, Anya Corke, had issued a statement denying the allegation. She said that she had not been victimized by my son and she had never met me or my son. Anya added that she had never been assaulted and that the only way in which her ‘modesty was outraged’ has been by the publication of her picture by the pro-UMNO blogs in connection with these lies.

my son’s former school, SMJK Heng Ee principal Mr Goh Boon Poh has also publicly denied that such an incident had happened; and

Penang Education Director Encik Ahmad Tarmizi Kamaruddin had told the Star on 22.10.2011 that his department found no evidence to back the claims of sexual misconduct against my son in the pro-UMNO blogs.

I wanted to put the matter to rest so as not to affect my young son. He had skipped school for two days when the lies first surfaced. I had no wish for him to go through with this again or deal with police investigations which involves ninja character assassins operating behind shadowy pro-BN blogs.

However MCA and UMNO’s have continued unrelenting hate-filled attacks in their blogs such as UMNO Online, despite the above irrefutable denials. Even Bernama reported the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as joining in the controversy against my son, by saying that a denial was not enough and challenged for a police report to be lodged.

It is cowardly for BN and UMNO politicians to pick on and make fun of a young boy, especially UMNO Youth President Khairy Jamaluddin shameful lewd remarks. Khairy must be the biggest bully in Malaysia to pick on a young boy who can not defend himself. What type of father is Khairy to his two young sons when Khairy does not feel any remorse at his shameful lewd remarks?

I had urged BN and UMNO not to behave cowardly and that if you want to finish me off politically by any means, do your worst but please leave my young child alone. Unfortunately UMNO has refused and continued to imply that there must be something wrong if no police report is lodged.

UMNO Online even quoted a fictitious report from Guang Ming(immediately denied by Guang Ming) that I had said my young son was transferred out to another school because of drug problems in his former school. Lately pro-MCA blogs have also joined in politicizing the issue by agreeing with Muhyiddin and hinted that I am not a good father for refusing to lodge a police report.

My family and I are touched by the support shown by many Malaysians disgusted by BN and UMNO’s gutter politics. We are also deeply appreciative of Anya Corke for coming out publicly to clear my young son’s name and testify his innocence. We are encouraged by Anya mother’s statement that she is considering legal action to protect her daughter.

After discussions with my family and my son, we have decided with some reluctance that we have no choice but to act. Not to act will allow these bullies to continue to stain my young son’s image. My young son says that he will try to find the courage to face these bullies and cowards who refuse to apologise for their morally despicable and barbaric lies.

We will give UMNO Online 48 hours to withdraw and apologise for their dirty politics and lies against my son that he outraged a modesty of a girl classmate or else a police report will be lodged and other action taken.

Pemeriksaan ketat: Orang awam, media dilarang masuk

No matter what the facts are, Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari should be at least given a chance to defend himself instead of a violent suspension. Simply silent a person does not make up the facts but adversely creates more doubts. And that's inronic. Disagreement does not necessary means "kurang ajar" or "biadap". In fact, it leads to more independent thinking and rational discussions. And thats what Malaysians are missing. A lot of times, issues are made.

UIA gantung tugas pakar perlembagaan Aziz Bari

Keluarga Sarbaini mahu Najib tubuh S'jaya Diraja

Keluarga Sarbaini mahu Najib tubuh S'jaya Diraja
Muhammad Faizal

Tindakan keras kerajaan Umno Barisan Nasional dan pihak berkuasa Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) terhadap pakar undang-undang, Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari membuktikan bahawa ruang kebebasan akademik di Malaysia semakin sempit dan kian tertutup

Hentikan penindasan terhadap Aziz Bari

Harakahdaily

In one case he saw the person been inoculated or been fed intravenously a syringe which had a numbing effect on him. (Reporter: on the neck?) On the neck, yeah.

There was a white hospital van sitting outside all the time.

The cell leader would tell this fellow Lanny that this person is actually being organ harvested, and that van outside was for that purpose, and the injection was for that purpose as well.

The cell leader (said that) it was basically the same routine as he saw in prisoners sentenced to death. Somebody came to blood tested him; there was a syringe put in his neck; the people in white coat come to fetch him; there was a hospital van outside……

I mean, basically, if you are Falun Gong, and you are in prison, you are on your way to be organ harvested, as far as I can see.

For example, a man we interviewed in Bangkok, he escaped to Bangkok, his name is Yu Xinhui. He was jailed for six years in Sihui Prison in Guangzhou, in the south. He said it was common knowledge among the prisoners that people were taken regularly whenever somebody need an organ, when some official need an organ, or some rich person need an organ, they were taken and removed from the prison. And sometimes the other inmates or the guards would threaten him and say that, if you don’t cooperate, we will kill you and sell your organs.

And, once a year, a bus would come in, it would sweep through their prison cells, and it would park outside their building, and policemen would come to their hallway, and have a list of people. They would go in, ask for the person and check, OK, you are this person, OK, let’s take your shoes, your jacket, and let’s go. They are even not allowed to get their stuff. Go to the next room, find the person, it was very terrifying for they don’t know who is being taken, why, where are they going. And, they just collect these people, put them on the bus, sometimes there were two, or three, or four big buses full of people, in the middle of night, take them away, and these people would not be seen or heard from again.

They would do the x-ray of the chest and abdomen, they would do a sonogram of the liver and kidney areas. They would do very large blood sample. Sometimes they would take the blood out and put to eight different tubes, which suggest that they are doing tissue typing, that is, testing A for diseases, diseases that would make their organs unusable; also trying to see if there is a proper blood type or tissue type match for potential recipient of the organ. Then they also do a lot of urine samples, to see the health of their kidney functions. So they are doing all these different examinations on these people that are very specific to the function of organs, but they were not checking refluxes – they would not tape them on the knees to see the leg has a proper reflux reaction; they would not do the gynecological examinations for women, all these basic things you have in a normal physical, they are not given.

Here we were told, for example, in Masanjia, when the women were taken into the Masanjia Labor Camp, they went into the hospital clinic to check their health, if someone came in a stretcher, that is, they were laying down from torture, they were already beaten in detention center or in Masanjia, then the doctors would look at them and wave them away. If they were visibly injured or sick from torture, they would not be interested at all. They want young people, healthy people. And the more healthy they were, the more comprehensively they check them. They did repeated blood tests and urine samples to see how they can use their organs.

In Canada there was a documentary that was being done. They were interviewing us to talk about our report. CBC was advertising about the documentary. And so, the government of China called up the CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and asked them to pull the documentary, or change the documentary. CBC admits they got the call from the Chinese Embassy, they admitted publicly to get the call, and they changed the documentary to remove stuff from our report from the documentary. The documentary filmmaker refuses to make the changes. So they take away the documentary from him, and make the changes themselves.

I was in Australia, and I was doing one of these events in Gold Coast University. And the Gold Coast University, it was the same thing: advertise, and then at the last minute they canceled. Anyhow, we go to another location. This particular event was broadcast into China. It was live stream. You could listen to it through the Internet in China. You know, there were a couple of hundred people in the room, and there were a couple of hundred people in China that were listening to it. I gave a speech, and then the question answering session afterwards. And they were taking questions from China, as well as the audience in the room. So one of the guys who was from China, he asked me a question. He said, “I am from Internet police. You are running the risk of being killed for what you are doing.” And his question was, “Are you not afraid?” (Laugh). So, my answer was, you cannot shoot the messenger and solve the problem. The problem is the facts of the situation, not that I am talking about.

I mean it was actually interesting for me to see the video they put out there, to see the responses they put out there, because I mean, this kind of silly response, in the sense of indication, It is a reaffirmation. I mean, if the best they can do is denying what they put on there website, or denying what we have on tape, then obviously, I think we are on to something.

In fact, much of the persecution of Falun Gong exists outside the law. For example, there is an office called “610” Office, which is basically above the law. It’s a force of the policemen that can go without the arrest warrant to arrest anybody; sent them to labor camp without trial; torture them, obviously, illegally. They can do whatever they want. They can search, they can beat, they can arrest and detain and kill even. Same with the legal system. Falun Gong practitioners will not receive a fair trial; they are not allowed legal representation. Lawyers who tried to represent them are themselves, like Gao Zhisheng and others, jailed and tortured. So this whole campaign against Falun Gong, like other campaigns against petitioners, against democracy activists, against house Christians, and other groups, because Falun Gong is, maybe the largest, but certainly not the only group persecuted in China, exist outside the legal system. And so, it is very funny to pass a law, trying to stop something that is, to begin with is, existing outside the law, and is run by the Communist Party.

13:35 YC. Dhardhowa, The Tibet Post International

14:02 Colleen McKown, The Tibet Post International

16:31 The Tibetan Youth Congress

13:19 Tibetan Administration Official Media: Tibet Net

09:27 Carly Selby-James, The Tibet Post International

UMNO blogs cropped photo of chess player to accuse Guan Eng's son

UMNO blogs cropped photo of chess player to accuse Guan Eng's son

Oct 19: UMNO bloggers have used a photo belonging to an international chess champion in accusing the son of Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng of sexual misconduct at school which they said led to a transfer from his current school.

Revealing the latest discovery in parliament today, Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament Tony Pua showed the photo of Hong Kong's international chess Grandmaster, Anya Sun Corke, 21, who now studies in the US and has no ties with Malaysia, which the blogs claimed was the molest victim.

“UMNO is getting desperate into levelling such slander against Guan Eng by using his son who is only 16 years old. Through our investigation, we found out that the source of the female teenager is from the internet, not the exact source,” he explained.

Pua also showed how the picture had been 'cropped' from its original, which has a chessboard and can be viewed at www.chessbase.com.

The accusation against Lim's son was led by the bloggers and Bukit Gelugor UMNO division chief Novandri Hasan Basri, and later supported by UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin through a series of snide remarks on Twitter.

Lim yesterday strongly denied the accusations and slammed UMNO leaders as "ferocious beasts".

Meanwhile, Pua said Khairy must now apologise to Guan Eng's son and his family.

"Besides that, we hope that UMNO’s highest council will take action against Khairy,” said Pua, who said Khairy must now make good his claim of being an adherent of 'new politics'.
